Apéritif is a French word derived from the Latin verb aperire, which means "to open." The French colloquial word for apéritif is apéro. An apéritif is an alcoholic beverage usually served before a meal to stimulate the appetite and is usually dry rather than sweet.
Common choices for an apéritif are vermouth, pastis, ouzo, fino, amontillado and dry. An apéritif may be served with an hors d'oeuvre or amuse-bouche, such as crackers, cheese, pâté, quiche or olives.
Hors d'œuvre in French literally means 'outside the work', that is "not part of the ordinary set of courses in a meal". At events, it's a dish which stands on its own or supports the main course. We offer this form of catering for events where meals aren't to be served.
Though any food served before the main course is technically an hors d'oeuvre, the phrase is generally limited to individual items, such as cheese or fruit. Hors d'œuvres will whet your guests' appetites and leave an impression so they are worth the effort.
